Social Relevance

American Ride by Tody Keith

The American life can easily be classified as stereotypes that are usually close to being right. American Ride by Toby Keith uses these stereotypes to show how things work in the life of the Americans. “Momma gets her rocks off watching desperate house wives” stereotypes all of the stay-at-home moms and wives that watch shows like Desperate Housewives because that is how they get their entertainment and enjoyment out of life. This song also mentions how the dad in the family is the one who works to provide for the family and hopes to be part of the ‘good life’ that everyone strives to reach. This song also stereotypes kids who go on “YouTube [to learn] how to be cool” because as a kid not being cool puts you in a bad position socially. Also, this song references how being a mean girl is part of building up your social status as a teenager. This song is about how as Americans we find social status to be very important and we live by the rules of trying to have the best status and having everybody like you.

Back When I Knew It All by Montgomery Gentry

Teenagers think they know everything. They know how to do things without getting caught by their parents, and they think that they are awesome in general. When you are a teenager in high school or in college, you are not really out in the real world living your life. And where you stand, you know everything there is to know while in that position. This song represents learning about life when you get out of the college lifestyle and transition into living in the real world. There are so much more things to learn about life and values, and you go from knowing it all to learning about everything important to know about life. This song is about growing up and learning how to live in society and how there are always things to learn; you will never truly ‘know it all.’

I'm Still A Guy by Brad Paisley

Men are very sensitive about their masculinity. They do not like to show weakness or any femininity. But, sometimes when a guy is with a girl, she can have an influence on him. He will do things that are feminine like getting their eyebrows done, highlighting their hair, or holding their girlfriend’s/wife’s purse. Brad Paisley performs the song I’m Still a Guy to show that even though a guy will do feminine activities they are still a man. This song is defending all of the men who succumb to doing feminine activities because of their girlfriend’s or wives, saying that they are still a man and they can’t do feminine things all the time. And, he is saying that men don’t see things as women do; such as a French painting or a lake because they are guys. This song is social relevance for all men in relationship who are ‘whipped’ and do things that a girlfriend or wife influences them to do.

Knowledge

1.)Some People Change by Kenny Chesney

His old man was a rebel yeller,
Bad boy to the bone, he'd say,
Can't trust a color'd feller
He'd judge em by the tone of their skin,

He was raised to think like his dad,
Narrow mind and full of hate,
On the road to nowhere fast,
Till the grace of God got in the way,

Then he saw the light,
and hit his knees and cried and said a prayer,
Rose up a brand new man, left the old one right there,

(Chorus)
Here's to the strong thanks to the brave,
Don't give up hope, some people change,
Against all odds, against the grain,
Love finds a way, some people change,

She was born with her mothers habit,
guess you could say it's in her blood,
She hates that she's gotta have it,
She feels her glass up,
She'd love to kill that bottle,
But All she could think about is a,
Better life a second chance,
And everyone she's lettin down,
She throws that bottle down,

(Chorus)
Here's to the strong thanks to the brave,
Don't give up hope, some people change,
Against all odds, against the grain,
Love finds a way, some people change,

Thank God for those who make it,
Let them be the light,

(Chorus)

Some people change,
Here's to the strong thanks to the brave,
Don't give up hope, some people change,
Against all odds, against the grain,
Love finds a way, some people change, yea
Some people change
Some people change
Some people change
Some people change

2.)How Forever Feels by Kenny Chesney

Big orange ball, sinkin' in the water
Toes in the sand, couldn't get much hotter
Little umbrella shaped margaritas
Coconut oil, tannin' senioritas
Now I know how Jimmy Buffet feels

Hands on the wheel, cruisin' down the interstate
Gas pedal sticks, carries my car away
I was going fast as a Rambler goes
I could feel the speed from my head to my toes
Now I know how Richard Petty feels

I've been around the block a time or two
Done almost everything a boy can do
I've done some livin', yeah I've had fun
But there is one thing that I haven't done

Saved two months, bought a little diamond
Tonights the night, feels like perfect timin'
Down on one knee on momma's front steps
Man I'm gonna die if she really says yes
I wanna know how forever feels

I've been around the block a time or two
Done almost everything a boy can do
I've done some livin', yeah I've had fun
But there is one thing that I haven't done

I wanna know how forever feels
Hey, I wanna know how forever feels
Girl, I wanna know how forever feels

Joy

1.) Never Wanted Nothing More by Kenny Chesney

Couldn't wait to turn 16 and drive all the boy's around
Foot on the gas and hands on the wheel was all I could think about
A little rust in the bed of that truck and a four speed on the floor
Five-hundred dollars it was mine, all mine and I never wanted nothin' more

I took Katie down by the river with a six dollar bottle of wine
Just a fool tryin' to play it cool hopin' she'd let me cross the line
I was praying that she couldn't tell I hadn't been that far before
The first time's a one time feelin and I never wanted nothin' more,
No I never wanted nothin' more..

(Chorus)
Well I'm what I am and I'm what I'm not
I'm sure happy with what I've got
I live to love and laugh a lot
And thats all I need

My buddies all tried to change my mind
But I told them that I'd thought it through
Katie laughed and my mama cried when they heard me say "I do"
A little ring is a little thing, but its all I could afford
Now she's mine, all mine till the day I die, and I never wanted nothin' more

(Chorus)

One Sunday I listened to the preacher and I knew he was preaching to me
I couldn't help it I walked up front and I got down on my knees
Right then and there, I swear I changed when I found the Lord
Glory Hallelujah, good God almighty I never wanted nothin' more

(Chorus)

Never wanted nothin' more...
And I never wanted nothin' more

2.) When The Sun Goes Down by Kenny Chesney feat. Uncle Kracker

Sun tanned toes ticklin the sand
Cold drink chillin in my right hand
Watchin you sleep in the evening light
Restin up for a long, long night

[Chorus]
Cause when the sun goes down, we'll be groovin
When the sun goes down, we'll be feelin all right
When the sun sinks down over the water
Everything gets hotter when the sun goes down

All day long just takin it easy
Layin in the hammock where it's nice and breezy
Sleepin off the night before
Cause when the sun goes down, we'll be back for more

[Chorus:]
When the sun goes down, we'll be groovin
When the sun goes down,we'll be feeling alright
When the sun sinks down over the water
Everything gets hotter when the sun goes down

This old guitar and my dark sunglasses
This sweet concoction is smooth as molasses
Nothing to do but breathe all day
Until the big moon rises and it's time to play

[Repeat chorus]

Friendship

1.) You Find Out Who Your Friends Are by Tracy Lawrence feat. Tim McGraw

Tracy Lawrence:
Run your car off the side of the road
Get stuck in a ditch way out in the middle of nowhere
Or get yourself in a bind lose the shirt off your back
Need a floor, need a couch, need a bus fare

This is where the rubber meets the road
This is where the cream is gonna rise
This is what you really didn't know
This is where the truth don't lie

[Chorus] TL & TM:
You find out who your friends are
Somebody's gonna drop everything
Run out and crank up their car
Hit the gas, get there fast
Never stop to think 'what's in it for me?' or 'it's way too far'
They just show on up with their big old heart
You find out who your friends are

TL
Everybody wants to slap your backwants to shake your hand
when you're up on top of that mountain
But let one of those rocks give way then you slide back down look up
and see who's around then

TL: This ain't where the road comes to an end
TM: This ain't where the bandwagon stops
TL: This is just one of those times when
TM: A lot of folks jump off

[Chorus] TL & TM:
You find out who your friends are
Somebody's gonna drop everything
Run out and crank up their car
Hit the gas, get there fast
Never stop to think 'what's in it for me?' or 'it's way too far'
TM: They just show on up with their big old heart
TL/TM: You find out who your friends are

TL: When the water's high
TM: When the weather's not so fair
TL: When the well runs dry
TM: Who's gonna be there?

[Chorus] TL/TM
You find out who your friends are
Somebody's gonna drop everything
Run out and crank up their car
Hit the gas, get there fast
Never stop to think 'what's in it for me?' or 'it's way too far'
They just show on up with their big old heart
You find out who your friends are
(yeah, yeah)
You find out who your friends are

TL/TM
Run your car off the side of the road
Get stuck in a ditch way out in the middle of nowhere
(Well man, I've been there)
Or get yourself in a bind lose the shirt off your back
Need a floor, need a couch, need a bus fare
(Man, I've been there)

Man, I've been there
Oooh yeah.

2.) Friends In Low Places by Garth Brooks

Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one
You thought you'd see there
And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you
Said, honey, we may be through
But you'll never hear me complain

'Cause I've got friends in low places

Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

Well, I guess I was wrong
I just don't belong
But then, I've been there before
Everything's all right
I'll just say goodnight
And I'll show myself to the door
Hey, I didn't mean
To cause a big scene
Just give me an hour and then
Well, I'll be as high As that ivory tower
That you're livin' in

'Cause I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

Simile

Cold As You by Taylor Swift

"Oh, what a shame.
what a rainy ending given to a perfect day.
Just walk away, no use defending words you'll never say.
And now that I'm sittin' here thinkin' it through, I've never been anywhere as cold as you."

In this song Taylor Swift is talking about how the guy who she is with is very mean and no longer wants to be with her. She compares herself with a simile as never being as cold as him. She is saying that yeah she has been kind of mean to him, but she was nowhere near to being as heartless about what happened between them as he was.

Breathe by Taylor Swift

"And we know it's never simple,
Never easy.
Never a clean break, no one here to save me
You're the only thing I know like the back of my hand
And I can't,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to."

In this song, Taylor Swift is singing about how she is trying to heal from a broken heart. She is talking about how she is trying to move on from what happened and deal with the heartbreak. She compares the boy to her hand with a simile. she says "You're the only thing i know like the back of my hand." This is saying that she knew him so well like she knows the back of her hand from looking at it everyday, all day; and if there were a difference with it she would notice right away.

Metaphor

Leave the Peaces by The Wreckers

You're not sure that you love me
But you're not sure enough to let me go
Baby it ain't fair you know
To just keep me hangin' 'round

You say you don't wanna hurt me
Don't wanna to see my tears
So why are you still standing here
Just watching me drown

[Chorus]
And it's alright, yeah I'll be fine
Don't worry 'bout this heart of mine
Just take your love and hit the road
There's nothing you can do or say
You're gonna break my heart anyway
So just leave the pieces when you go

Now you can drag out the heartache
Baby you can make it quick
Really get it over with
And just let me move on

Don't concern yourself
With this mess you've left for me
I can clean it up, you see
Just as long as you're gone

[Chorus]

You not making up your mind
Is killing me and wasting time
I need so much more than that
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

[Chorus]

Leave the pieces when you go
Oh yeah
Leave the pieces when you go
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Leave the pieces when you go

In this song the singer has gotten her heart broken. The guy she is with is not sure if he wants to be with her or not and is contemplating ending the relationship. She tells him to just end it and "leave the pieces when" he goes. This is a metaphor for her broken heart. By telling him to leave the pieces she means for him to just get over her so she can start healing and get over him.

I'm Already There by Lonestar

"I'm already there
Take a look around
I'm the sunshine in your hair
I'm the shadow on the ground
I'm the whisper in the wind
I'm your imaginary friend
And i know I'm in your prayers
Oh I'm already there"

The singer in this song is off at war. He does not come into contact with his family that much and they miss him. They ask when he is coming home. He tells them he is already there and where he is with them. He uses metaphors to show that he is there with them in everything they do and in their memory.
